Far too many newborns die from infections that could be prevented by vaccination during pregnancy, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
During pregnancy, protective antibodies are transferred across the placenta from mother to child. Vaccination in pregnancy boosts this natural process, providing protection to the infant in the early weeks of life.
Just as clothing protects us from extreme temperature, rain, or abrasion, so vaccinations create a layer of protection from infection.
"Clothed with Protection" is a collaborative project with Luke Jerram, an internationally renowned artist, ten inspiring fashion designers in Uganda, and Dr Chrissie Jones, a doctor and expert in vaccination in pregnancy. Together, we have created items of clothing to communicate the benefits of vaccination in pregnancy to the woman and her baby. We invite you to see for yourself how vaccines can protect mother and babies against infection. You can also hear about our research and the vaccines we are currently testing, to ensure babies are even better protected against other infections in the future.
Together with the clothing, you will be able to explore the journey of the project through a film, view the photographic exhibition, and even design clothing yourself.
